The three most important things in life, business or relationships are planning, communication and leadership. As they say, those who fail to plan, plan to fail and without a carefully laid plan, even if goals are reached, it’s rarely in the most effective way. Once a plan is made it requires clear and effective communication delivered by decisive and inspirational leadership in order to implement it..

Careful planning requires creativity, attention to detail and contingencies. Hope for the best but plan for all possible outcomes and never over-promise and under-deliver; instead, take a conservative approach and you’ll rarely be disappointed.

Clear and effective communication starts with putting yourself in the listener’s shoes, understanding his language and biases, and then seeking not to change those biases but to deliver your message through them. Clear communication also requires a simpler approach. Too often, the heart of the message is bogged down with empty rhetoric and pretentious double-speak employed either to artificially empower the speaker, deceive the listener or both. Creativity and passion is also a must; without them, the listener’s attention will soon be lost.

After a plan is carefully made and clearly communicated, great leadership will take action and do so quickly, with resolve, inspiration and strength. Great leaders, while still seeking the input of the team and ensuring that they are not too far in front, can not be constantly worrying whether 100 percent of the team is 100 percent “on board”. There will not always be the time or the possibility of building a consensus and often, if the leader does nothing more than take up the charge, inspiring his team as he does so, they will be behind him every step of the way, without question.
